Ask a Recruiter: How can I make it easier for my recruiter to help me find a great job?

This could seem like a simple question but I can guarantee that every good recruiter would be happy to hear you ask this question or follow the suggestions below.

  1. Be honest and upfront from the beginning about the following:
    1. What your current job situation is like and why you are seeking a change.
    2. If you are truly seeking a change now or looking to establish a relationship for the future.  If it is for the future, when that might be.
    3. Your experience and skills, including your proudest accomplishments.
    4. Why you have parted ways with former employers.
    5. What your dream job would be like.
    6. Your willingness and considerations for relocation and/or travel.
    7. Any employers that you would love to work for or vice versa.
    8. Your current compensation and your realistic needs to make a change.
    9. Your status and progress in the job search.  Mainly the key facts that will impact your availability.  Ie, if you are expecting an offer soon, deep in the interview process, just starting, etc.
    10. How soon you could be available to interview.
    11. The timeframe you will require to make a change when you get the right offer.  This may include, notice required to current employer, upcoming vacations, time to move and other variables.
  2. Be responsive.  Timing can make all the difference for some opportunities.  If your recruiter knows you well enough to match you to a great opportunity but can’t get a response from you, it may disappear.  Make sure your recruiter has your mobile phone and the email address that you check most often.
  3. Update your recruiter on progress with other opportunities.  If your recruiter knows that you are getting close to taking another offer, they may be able to take some steps to expedite a response from his clients per other offers.
  4. Even if you get a job that you like by some other means, stay in touch with your recruiter periodically.  You never know when you may need to make another change so make sure to let them know.
