Ask a Recruiter

Question:
Is it OK to be chummy with my recruiter?

Answer: Brenda_2008 web
“This is an excellent question. The recruiter / candidate relationship is both friendly and professional, so it’s sometimes hard to know where the communication boundaries lie.

On one hand, it’s very important that candidates feel they can relax enough to be honest and candid during general calls with their recruiter. Very often, candidates must share background information that could be interpreted as complicated, or perhaps even sticky. We recruiters realize that it isn’t easy for our candidates to put themselves in such vulnerable positions. But by providing such history, candidates tool us with the information we need to represent them in their best light. In order for candidates to feel comfortable enough to share their employment stories, there has to be an adequate level of trust. They need to know that it’s OK to be honest with us. In this respect, the relationship being established is personal. But there’s a slight caveat…

Candidates (perhaps you) also need to remember that a good recruiter will make on-going assessments about your professionalism, as well as your ability to articulate your breadth of knowledge, intended career path, and work experience. We know what our clients seek in a great employee, and we’re always listening for those core strengths to shine though in our candidates. So, it’s very important that you demonstrate your knowledge and communication skills when given the opportunity. You certainly don’t need to be “on guard” with your recruiter during every phone call, but when asked, please put on your professional hat! Don’t make the mistake of saving your “best self” for that client interview. Your recruiter is your advocate and champion in the search process. Keep in mind that if he or she does not fully realize both your professional and interpersonal strengths, that interview may never come to pass!

Ask a Recruiter

Question:
Should I tailor my resume for each position to which I apply?

Answer: Jennifer
“Definitely not! Doing this causes you to lose who you are and what you uniquely bring to the table. Ever tried to change yourself for a social situation? It doesn’t work, does it? It’s because you’re trying to be someone you’re not… The same idea applies to resumes.

Instead, make sure you write a really strong resume, then tailor your cover letter for each individual job application.

In some exceptional cases, you can tweak your resume for a specific job… by highlighting certain words or moving the order around a little. However, save this for exceptional situations only!

Simpsons Fun

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
Ok, time for a little fun! Here's one of my favorite clips from the Simpsons. Homer Simpson reminds me of a few candidates. No matter how often we encourage candidates to dress for interviews, leave the gum behind, go light on the cologne/perfume, use firm handshakes and the like… well, sometimes the advice just doesn't sink in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmsuYeztVbs

Ask a Recruiter

Question:
Should I ask about a future employer’s turnover rate?

Answer: tiffany_crop
“Yes. When you are interviewing for positions, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask a potential employer about their turnover rate. If the turnover rate* is in the double digits, be concerned and start asking questions to make sure the opportunity is a long-term fit for you. If it's over 30%, run (unless you are being hired to improve it)!”

*Turnover rate is calculated by dividing the number of terminations by the average number of employees. For example, if an employer has 15 terminations in a year with an average of 200 employees on payroll, their turnover rate is 7.5%. In our field, RN's have one of the highest turnover rates that hover around 15% annually.
