Ask a Recruiter
Question:
How should I prepare for a phone interview?
Answer:
“Good recruiters will be focused on professionalism, ethics and sincere interest in assisting their candidates and clients. A good recruiting experience will begin with the recruiter taking the time to listen earnestly to your story and interests. At the same time, your recruiter should be making sure to ask questions that draw out your professional and personal information that will help them develop your unique value proposition as a candidate. In addition to your tangible criteria like professional skills, career accomplishments, compensation and location/travel needs, you should also be speaking about things that are closer to the heart; what you have enjoyed most in your career, work cultures that are best for you, and so on.
A good recruiter will then speak with you honestly and openly about opportunities they may have that might be a match for your profile. They shouldn’t take out a hammer and try to force you into a job that doesn’t fit. You should speak about potential jobs one at a time, sharing questions and thoughts back and forth and confirm your approval before going any further. When both sides agree that one of the opportunities is right to pursue, you should work together to make sure that your recruiter has the most relevant information to share with their client about you for the particular job.
After the recruiter has presented you to their client, they should keep you posted with any progress status and you should do the same. This process can move slowly or quickly, depending on their clients’ needs, but you should be able to have a feeling of confidence that they will keep you updated when there is something you need to know or that they will be advocating for you when they are able to do so. You should also feel that they are comfortable having you touch base with them periodically as well. If their clients want to interview you, their firm should play an active role in coordinating interviews, preparing you for interviews, and communicating and managing the results."

Question:
What should I do in the face of a job loss?
Answer:
“First and foremost, look at the cause. If you’ve been laid off due to the economy or a corporate downsizing, realize it is not YOUR fault and quickly put a plan in place to gain employment. If you have been laid off for cause, it is important to accept responsibility, understand the cause and work to rectify the behavior before beginning your job search. On a personal note, you’ll need to break the news to your family honestly and without blame. Make sure they understand that you are actively looking for employment.
Addressing your finances is a very important part of a job loss. Assess your expenses and your income and immediately begin tightening your spending where possible to prepare for a period of reduced income. If you receive a severance package, it’s always a good idea to have a lawyer, friend or family member to review prior to signing. Healthcare and retirement are huge concerns during the time of a job loss. Check with your former employer to learn more about your retirement plan and extension of benefits through COBRA.
When these tasks are complete, you should begin your job search. We recommend you begin by reaching out to your entire network of contacts and let everyone know you are in the market for a new job, ask for leads, and pass your resume around. Once you’ve exhausted your personal network, reach out to industry recruiters to assist you and begin searching for opportunities on job boards, company websites and social networking media such as Linked In, Google Groups, etc."
